Checked October 31, 2026 against the city's and its hauler's own pages. We never print a pickup day for a whole city, because it changes by street.
🗓️ How Pickup Works
Each home has its own assigned weekly trash day; enter your address in Winston-Salem Collects. Recycling alternates by Red Week and Blue Week. Set recycling at the curb by 6 a.m. on your scheduled day and do not bag it. Place carts with the lid hinge away from the street, about three feet from cars, mailboxes and other carts.
The City collects garbage weekly at no charge for single-family homes. The New Resident Resources page says Waste Management collects recycling every other week at no charge; the Sanitation page names no contractor.
| Cart | Sizes | How often |
|---|---|---|
| 🗑️ Trash (brown) | 96 gallon | weekly |
| ♻️ Recycling (blue) | standard cart for most homes; homes on bin routes may have up to two 18-gallon bins | every other week (Red Week / Blue Week) |
| 🍂 Yard waste (green) | 96 gallon (up to 3 carts per home, 150 lbs per cart) | weekly (optional, fee-based) |
🛋️ Bulk Item Pickup
- 📞How to book: Bulky items are picked up by City crews only during your annual neighborhood area cleanup (2026 schedule runs March 2 through August 31 to September 4, no collection April 6 to 10). Check your week on the Bulky Item Schedule map. Put items out the weekend before your scheduled week; trucks make one pass and late items are not collected. Outside the cleanup, take items to Hanes Mill Road Landfill (325 W Hanes Mill Rd.).
- 📏Limits: Single-family homes only (no apartments or businesses). Accepted: appliances, carpet, furniture, mattresses, toys. Not accepted: construction materials, car parts, cement, electronic waste, glass, hazardous waste, lumber, oil drums, paint, rocks, tires and yard waste. If bulky items are mixed with unacceptable materials, none of it will be collected. City residents get two free trips to the Hanes Mill Road landfill with a permit.
