🗑️ Charleston Trash Pickup

Who collects in Charleston, South Carolina, how to find your pickup day, bulk item pickup, holiday delays and what it costs. Checked October 31, 2026.

⚡ Quick Answer

In Charleston, residential trash is collected by City of Charleston Environmental Services, Trident Waste, Charleston County Environmental Management (recycling). Pickup days depend on your address, so use the official lookup (CHS Trashtracker (app and address lookup); also MapNet and the Garbage Collection Calendar) to find yours. Questions: (843) 724-7311.

Checked October 31, 2026 against the city's and its hauler's own pages. We never print a pickup day for a whole city, because it changes by street.

🗓️ How Pickup Works

Homes are serviced once a week. Enter your street address in CHS Trashtracker to see your area's garbage and trash collection schedule (it can sync to Apple, Google or Microsoft calendars and sends reminders), or use MapNet or the Garbage Collection Calendar. Place garbage containers at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before pickup and bring them back no later than 6 p.m. on pickup day. Place carts within 2 feet of the curb, handle facing away, at least 3 feet from mailboxes, recycling bins, trees and vehicles. Bulk items and yard waste go out no earlier than two days before pickup.

City crews serve the Peninsula, Inner West Ashley and James Island; Trident Waste serves Daniel Island, Cainhoy, outer West Ashley and Johns Island. The City FAQ says "The City of Charleston does not provide recycling services"; curbside recycling is provided by Charleston County Environmental Management.

🛋️ Bulk Item Pickup

  • 📞How to book: The City collects bulk items, including white goods, on your regularly scheduled trash collection day. Place junk, furniture and other bulk items in their own pile at the curb; place large metal items and appliances separately at the curb. Drain hot water heaters and remove or secure refrigerator and freezer doors (the FAQ says no white goods are picked up unless all doors or drawers are removed). Yard waste (leaves, twigs, weeds, grass clippings) goes in brown paper yard bags supplied by the resident; tree limbs cut into 4-foot lengths and 4-inch diameter and stacked curbside. Cardboard and other items outside the green cart are not collected; excess garbage can go to a Charleston County Convenience Center.
  • 📏Limits: Limbs: 4-foot lengths, 4-inch diameter. No household garbage mixed with yard waste.

🎄 Holiday Delays

The City FAQ says: "During the holiday week, your collection generally occurs one day later than your regular day." Changes are posted per holiday and apply to City-crew areas; for Presidents' Day and Veterans Day (Nov. 11, 2026) the City posted that Trident Waste areas run on their normal schedule. Holidays named: Presidents' Day, Veterans Day.
